Lewis Hine was a freelance photographer for the National Child Labor Committee. Hine captured images of children working in mills, factories, mines, and fields to convey the need of child labor laws. In this lesson, students will be analyzing Hine’s images from the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Pennsylvania coal mines, and textile mills in order to develop and deepen visual literacy skills. To examine the images, the students will be engaged in the Making Thinking Visible strategy of See-Think-Wonder. Students will also create 5-word memoirs for the images they analyze, serving as a formal, formative assessment. To differentiate, students with varying ability levels will also be allowed to illustrate their 5-word memoirs or use the C-S-I strategy from Making Thinking Visible.
