TPS Mississippi will be hosting a virtual professional development event focused on teaching with primary sources.
March 27, 2021 – 9-3pm
Learn about teaching with primary sources from the Library of Congress and other resources for teaching with primary sources. Sessions will include:
- Classroom Teachers Sharing Their Lessons Using Primary Sources (Topics include Child Labor, Natural Disasters and more)
- Working with English Language Learners and Primary Sources
- MDE Social Studies, Professional Development Coordinator
- Content sessions related to world history and Mississippi studies from MSU history professors
- Teaching with Primary Sources Teachers Network
- Teaching with Primary Sources Pedagogy
Participants will choose from 3 concurrent sessions per hour.
What you receive:
• FREE 5 hour professional development
• FREE .5 CEUs – We will pay for the .5 CEU.
Expectations/Application Process:
• Attend the plenary/opening session as well as 5 of the offered sessions.
Collaboration with MPE:
TEACHING WITH PRIMARY SOURCES USING LIBRARY OF CONGRESS ONLINE RESOURCES: Teaching with Primary Sources (TPS) Mississippi, a member of the Library of Congress Teaching with Primary Sources Consortium, provides short- and long-term professional development across the state. TPS Mississippi will present on six different topics, including an overview of the resources available at the Library of Congress online and five different pedagogical strategies for teaching primary sources. The strategies include visual discovery, corroboration, circle of viewpoints/multiple perspectives, writing for understanding, and the explanation game. These sessions are useful for social studies, English Language Arts, elementary, and gifted educators.

What you receive:
• FREE 4 week professional development – Feb. 1-Mar. 30, 2020
• 3 CEUs Included (paid for)
• Recognition as a TPS Mississippi Certified Educator
• $100 stipend
Expectations/Application Process:
• Participate and complete work assigned in all 4 modules (Intro to the Library, Primary Source Analysis, Teaching with Primary Sources, and Applying What You Know) over the 4 week course.
• Currently teach ELA or Social studies (Grades 3-12); or Gifted education
• Complete application and documents for payment
• Plan the Library of Congress infused lesson plan that you create as part of the course and share it on the TPS Teachers Network
• Complete post survey about your lesson and teaching with primary sources (required to receive the stipend)
You will be notified as soon as possible about your acceptance.
